The best way to have a happy, healthy smile is to be diligent about your daily dental hygiene routines. It’s easy to let some things slip once in a while; here are some basics to remember as you brush up on your brushing and flossing.

Brushing:  Brushing your teeth is the foundational principle of taking care of your dental health. Use a toothbrush that has earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance (you’ll see the logo on the package), and replace it every 3-4 months. Brush your teeth for 2 minutes, 2 times a day. Brush the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces of your teeth–this includes the inside surfaces of your front teeth. To do this, tip the brush inward, perpendicular to the gums, and use several up-and-down strokes.

Flossing: This oral hygiene habit is vital to your dental health! Sometimes it can be difficult.  If flossing is hard for you, talk with Dr. Timothy B. Chatterley about flossing alternatives. This could include water flossing, a pre-strung flosser, or floss for sensitive gums.

Conventional flossing technique uses a single filament floss that has earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Use a gentle back-and-forth sawing motion (his will adequately remove food and plaque without damaging your gums).

If you are just starting your flossing habit, it is normal for there to be some discomfort. However, f this persists for more than 2 weeks, talk to your dentist at Bright Smiles Dental.

Of course, it is important to support these dental habits with regular, biannual visits to the dentist. If you are in the Casselberry, Florida area, call Bright Smiles Dental at 407-628-1066 to schedule your next appointment! Our team looks forward to working with you.
