Wintertime can be hard on your smile–the holiday food, the busy schedule, and unfortunately, the illness that so often shows up this time of year. Here are some things you can do this winter to take care of your smile.
First, make sure you are flossing every day, and brushing twice a day. This is vital as the holiday season continues. No one wants a cavity intruding on their holiday plans!
Holiday food can also cause problems. Many seasonal foods and drinks are full of sugar, acid, or both. There are the more obvious items, like candy, cookies, and hot chocolate. Accompany these with a large glass of water. There are also less visible culprits: wine and alcoholic drinks, tea with sugar and lemon, sports drinks, and cough drops, for example. Be sure to limit these items, or choose sugar-free options. Chewing sugar-free gum after consuming acidic or sugary treats can help clean your mouth and prepare it for brushing.
Lastly, be sure to replace your toothbrush! Toothbrushes should be replaced every 3-4 months, and the holidays are a great time to do so! Treat yourself to a brush in your favorite color, or that electric toothbrush you have been eyeing for a while now. Replace your toothbrush if it becomes contaminated. Additionally, some people choose to replace their toothbrush after they recover from being sick.
